KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) – Hundreds of people walk to raise money and awareness for Type 1 Diabetes Sunday.
It was for the second annual JDRF Community One Walk.
People dressed in team shirts, and raised $20,374 for research to find a cure to Type 1 Diabetes.
“I just wish everyone knew what it felt like to actually have it, and feel the lows and highs and how that makes me feel not like them,” said Reilley Donscheski.
Donscheski was diagnosed as Type 1 when she was 6 years old.
She still plays sports and enjoys hanging out with her friends, just like any other teenager.
“She still is very active in things, and we don’t ever want that to change,” said Tabitha Donscheski, Reilley’s mom. “So we’re glad we have the support of the school system, and our family, and our extended family and friends. It just means a lot for her to still be able to function just like any other kid.”
The purpose of the walk wasn’t just to raise money, but also awareness for the disease.
Type 1 Diabetes is an auto immune disease that can’t be caused by diet or lifestyle.
Erin McDorman said she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 23.
She said people often don’t understand what the disease really is.
“I was really lucky to be diagnosed later in life, but I want to raise awareness for kids who are diagnosed with Type 1 and have to grow up with it. I think it makes people a lot more caring too and aware of other people and what they have going on,” McDorman said.
JDRF is a non-profit that works to prevent, treat and cure Type 1 Diabetes.
Many participants said the walk helps them have a sense of community, and feel less alone in their fight.
“Even knowing just a little bit about the disease can be huge,” said Laura Eberly Reiner, development manager for JDRF. “There can be a Type 1 in your kiddos classroom, or somebody at work that there’s certain risk involved. If their blood sugar is too high or too low. I think just keeping people informed about this is huge.”
